Viral Hepatitis remains a serious health concern in our community, made more challenging by limited access to local treatment options. Currently, individuals who screen positive for Hepatitis C are often placed on a waiting list, with no guarantee of when—or if—a new treatment program will open nearby. The alternative is an out-of-town referral, which is not feasible for many due to transportation barriers.

Fortunately, treatment for Hepatitis C has evolved. For uncomplicated cases, care is straightforward, requiring only routine blood work and minimal monitoring. The medications are safe, highly effective, and have few side effects. Best of all, specialist care is no longer required for most patients.

For the past two years, our office has successfully treated Hepatitis C following the most up-to-date clinical guidelines (www.hcvguidelines.org). Through participation in Project ECHO and support from the National Clinician Consultation Center at the University of California, San Francisco, we’re also equipped to manage more complex cases safely and effectively.
